- Well for those of you who are unfamiliar with Sting and the Police, Sting would have written a bass line like this one. This song was written bass line first (verses and chorus) and then I wrote words to fit the bass line/chord structure. The inspiration for this song came from my former pastor, Ralph Kucera, when he was talking about Jesus being the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. As he was speaking, the thought popped into my head, "not only is He the beginning and the ending, but everything in between!" And so King Jesus was born.
I struggled with the words in this song a bit because I wanted to convey that praise and worship is spiritual warfare but not do the "stomp on the devil" type song. So, I went back and forth on the "I have come for war" line because my intention is always to praise God first, not beat up the devil. But, scripturally, when God's people worshipped Him, the enemy was defeated. So, I wanted to convey that without giving the devil his due, so to speak. Then there is the "send the devil on the run" line. But, as I read the Old Testament, I realize that as God's people celebrate Him, He does just that ... sends the enemy on the run! So all this song is saying is "God, do today what You did then."
Musically, I got to play bass on this one and Russ played drums. Chris Kohler did the wah pedal electric guitar and Terry did the synth horns and the saxophone. The percussion section at the intro is Brad Bisquera on bongos, djembe, shaker (one at a time!) The middle percussion "jam" session is Brad on bongos, Russ Sechler on congas, and Steve Goetz on Brad Bisquera's drumset! We overdubbed it about six months after the basic tracks were done.
Vocally, I sang the lead (I was going to do a second track an octave higher but opted to keep it simpler). The opening "I have come for worship, I have come for war" echo thing was a late blooming idea that Tom (the engineer) and I dreamed up. We thought it would take five minutes to do it. It took an hour to get it right and then it got erased and we had to do it again on another day!
God's Women of Treasure filled out the vocal roster once again. In order of appearance, you will hear on Geanell on "as I celebrate" followed by Charlotte on "as we worship You" and last Lydia on "as we celebrate." (They blend so well together that it is hard to tell who is who). Geanell does all of the "King Jesus" stuff with me at the end. What can I say... the lady shreds!
- Lyrics
- I (we) have come to worship,
I (we) have come for war.
I (we) have come to sing to You
like I've (we've) never done before. (repeat)
And as I (we) worship You, set me (us) on fire.
As I (we) worship You, Lord take me (us) higher.
I (we) have come to celebrate,
I (we) have come to dance.
I (we) have come to lift you high
as I (we) lift my (our) hands. (repeat)
And as I (we) celebrate, let Your healing come.
And as I (we) celebrate, send the devil on the run!
For you are the Holy One, the mighty King of kings,
The Beginning and the Ending, and everything in between!
King Jesus, (King Jesus). We bless (King Jesus)
King Jesus, (King Jesus). We bless, King Jesus!
