Kevin's Notes
Because it is so different, this is one of my favorite songs. Although I am not entirely happy with my vocal prowess on this song (or lack thereof) it is still a fun song to listen to. Again, I had a mission with this song. My challenge? To write a praise song in 7/8 time with a chorus in 4/4 time. I am a little embarrassed to admit how much this song sounds like another Sting song (The Munificent Seven) but I like the song and wanted to try my hand at a weird time signature. King of Peace was the result.

I did not rely too heavily on major theology on this one and people should not take it too seriously. I realize that the world was made in six and not seven days and that Jesus may not be creating heaven as you read this ("I go to prepare a place for you...") Scripture says that He's seated at the Father's right hand. Nevertheless, I heard Keith Green mention this idea in one of his songs years ago and was intrigued with the idea of how awesome heaven would be if it were true! Something to think about on a rainy day anyway...

Musically, I wanted a 7/8 "groove" so I wrote a bass line that was easy to remember and play in the G-C-D chord progression. Chris Bengs supplied the bass chops on this one and Russ Sechler did the drums. Considering the tricky transition from 7/8 to 4/4 and back and forth, they were able to get it in just two takes, proving the masterful skill they both possess. Chris Bengs came back six months later and added an electric crunch guitar part to follow the bass line and knocked it out in something like ten minutes.

Again, Terry Lawless did the B3. I got to do the funky tambourine groove and Darren Clarke did the slide and lead guitars. I got to do the BGVs on this one, which was fun but something was missing. Since Scott Underwood was going to do Strong Tower, I asked him to do this one with me too. He listened to the demo tape and said, "you like Sting don't you!" He agreed to do it and the song went to another level. Incidentally, I asked Darren Clarke to sing verse three and the chorus but he begged off. Boy, those Brits are a temperamental folk. Actually, Darren is a way cool guy and if I do another project again, he WILL sing on it! (O.K. Darren, buddy, pal, friend?) The echo at the end that pans right and left is Scott Underwood.

The "mistake" ending was done on purpose (it was going to fade out). The "we should end it that way" comment came from the scratch vocal track as we were doing the basic tracks and we decided since it is a fun song not to be taken too theologically serious to leave it in!

Lyrics
My heart is stirred by a noble theme.
A song of joy for You, my King.
I'll sing of all the works You've done,
Of who You are and why You've come.
And my praise will never cease,
For the Holy One ... King of Peace.

Like the sound of many waters,
Is Your voice to your sons and daughters.
I hear the sound in a gentle breeze,
It moves the mountains, shakes the trees,
I'm on my face, I'm on my knees,
Holy One .. King of Peace.

King of Peace, You're all I need.
King of Peace, You're all I need.
And my praise will never cease
To the Holy One ... King of Peace.

A thousand angels at each side,
You will come for a holy bride.
Seated on a snow white steed,
You will ride victoriously.
And as your hand displays your deeds,
the world will bow ... to the King of Peace.

King of Peace, You're all I need.
King of Peace, You're all I need.
I'm on my face I'm on my knees
for the Holy One ... King of Peace.

You made the world in just seven days.
At Your works, I stand amazed.
For if You made this world in seven,
I can't wait 'til I get to heaven.
Cuz You've been working for two thousand years,
to make a place for me and my peers.
And boys and girls from every nation,
will join in the celebration,
we'll be dancing at Your feet,
before the throne of God ... the King of Peace.
