Rain

Kevin's Notes
This is the oldest song on the CD. Written in early 1991, I have thought of having this song on a CD for nine years. I wanted the last power chord to ring out with a clap of thunder and hear a downpour of rain beginning in the background. So, we did it!

This song was written pretty scientifically. I had a computer bible and printed out every verse on rain and highlighted passages that spoke of God's rain on His people. But, even though it was a left brain exercise, the first few times I played this song in a home group setting, it actually did rain within 24 hours! Even years later, at times God has sent rain (when it wasn't forecast) after we've sung the song. So, I thought I had it figured out, "Anybody need rain? Just sing this really anointed song and God will answer!" I soon discovered that God is not into formulas and that my thoughts were not His.

Musically, we wanted to build the song little by little, instrument by instrument, voice by voice. So, it starts with the acoustic guitar and strings come in the patented Kohler volume swells, and slowly builds, just like real rain, until it's an "in your face" experience. By the time we got to the final "and send Your rain" part, we had five or six vocals, a B3, a mandolin, strings, two acoustics, an electric guitar, drums, shaker, bongos, and who knows what else going. Something like 36 tracks were used in this song. As Tom G. would say, "this is HUGE!" But I love the dynamics of the song and the way it came out. All of the singers did such a great job on it and it just flows so nicely. The GWOT improvisation ("no other God can make it shower / bear Your arm and show Your power" etc.) was their idea and I love it! It drops into the next song really well too, which is a credit to the Goetz / Koch combo.

Lyrics
Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain.
Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain.
On us Lord, let it rain once more.
Send your rain, oh Lord,
let it rain once more. (repeat)

Open the fountains of the deep,
Your good treasure let us see.
The windows of heaven open wide,
and let your rain fall down upon Your bride.

Send a gentle rain, send a gentle rain
On our land, on our barren land.
Let it rain again, on our barren land.

The earth is Yours and all it contains
so send Your promised latter rains.
For no other God can make it shower,
so Father, bear your arm and show Your power,
and send Your rain!
