- This song is inspired by Romans 12:1-2 which implies that our everyday life is to be worship to God, not just the songs we sing. So, using the many names of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I wrote and re-wrote three verses with the same chorus. Lifting of the hands is often symbolic of our surrender to God, so this song is an opportunity to re-commit to God and say, "In all that I do, I will worship You." The bridge was re-written three or four times, then changed again right before we recorded it, driving everyone CRAZY.
Musically, we wanted sonic mayhem at the beginning of the song, so we had four or five percussion people whacking on different pieces of equipment mixed in with two tracks of Chris Kohler's e-bow, the Roland GR-1 synth strings and Grant Nordwall's fretless bass. We threw some delay on one acoustic guitar and let the other one drive the song with the classic "chucka-chucka" style of strumming. Dynamically, we layered the vocals with Cindy Dirlam coming in on verse two, Randy Sechler on verse three and Alysha Bengs on the bridge, and the group on the fade out chorus. Looking back, we should have put some piano on this song, but as they say "hindsight is 20/20."
This song is supposed to be at a tempo of around 95 on the metronome but for some reason, we just couldn't slow down enough to settle into that slower groove pocket.
- Lyrics
- Father God, King of creation,
Author of life, Ruler of every nation.
Holy one, Redeemer from of old,
God of my fathers, lover of my soul.
I lift my hands to You
as I give my life to You.
In all that I say and do,
I'll worship in spirit and in truth.
Son of God, Lion of Judah,
Bread of life, Holy and Great Messiah,
King of kings, Beginning and End,
Lamb that was slain, Yet You are my friend.
And to the God who walks in the midst of the fire,
I lift You high. My one desire is to lift You high.
Holy Ghost, Living water,
Breath of life, Fire sent from the Father,
Spirit of Truth, coming like gentle wind,
Comforter, fill us again.
