- This song began when I was driving in my old truck to work and heard these words in my head: "Jesus, glorious, mighty, victorious..." So I pulled over and sang the melody into my portable tape recorder so I wouldn't forget it. When I got to the church office, I wrote a few further ideas down. Then, a few days later, on the way to get ice cream in San Luis Obispo with Randy and Kathy Sechler, I began to get more words. It is a half-hour drive to get there and by the time we arrived, the song was almost done! I had a melody without guitar chords so the next day, I got the guitar out and wrote the bass line and chord structure. We did the song a few weeks later in church and the positive response was really strong. We did not add the 3/4 middle section until just before going to the studio.
The church band was used to the "old" version and resisted any change, especially a time signature change in the middle of the song! Since I knew that Steve Goetz and Mark Koch were going to be working with me, I gave them a rough copy of the song and we came up with a workable plan that we finally executed in the studio.
We did not plan on piano or electric guitar on the song but Chris Kohler convinced me that he had worked out a good electric guitar part for the song, so we gave him a shot and it really worked! Then, I had Terry Lawless, a local studio musician, listen to the song and he said, "oh, is it in E minor or F sharp minor?" He then proceeded to play a complimentary piano part and within an hour we had his piano tracks recorded.
We brought in the raw talent of Lani Sechler (who is now on the worship team but then wasn't) to do the women's lead vocal part. Toni Tuller, who had a very complimentary voice when mixed with Lani's, backed her up. Lani's uncle, Randy, backed me up and, in my opinion, was a perfect choice. We used more group vocals on the middle section for a more worshipful feel and threw in a vibratone (the "boing" sound) for extra measure.
This song is my personal favorite on the CD and is my favorite song of those God has given me thus far because it is worshipful, biblical, and fun to sing!
- Lyrics
- Jesus, Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
You are Morning Star, and the Prince of peace.
Jesus, God's son, Holy and Anointed One,
Savior, Most High, King of all kings.
And your voice is like the thunder that echoes on the sea.
and your mighty deeds are wonderful to me ... my Victorious (King).
Jesus, Glorious, Mighty, Victorious,
Pearl of great price, Perfect Sacrifice,
Jesus, Righteousness, Lamb of God, Priceless,
You are "I AM", Lord of all life.
